Spring is around the corner. Here is one of the many birds that will soon return to C & E Europe return from their wintering areas... Eurasian Wryneck (Jynx torquilla). 

We are still out birding 😃 Here is a female White-backed Woodpecker, one of 2 seen yesterday in the Bükk Hills in Hungary.  

Not a lot of guiding this year, so I used that spare time to write another book! Here:

Bee-eater with a bee

European Bee-eaters (Merops apiaster) are one of Europe's most colourful and 'exotic' bird species. This one is in Hungary where there are many colonies, and this year seem to be doing very well.

Grey Partridge

The Grey Partridge (Perdix perdix) has declined greatly in many countries. This one was snapped at the roadside in the Kiskunsag, Hungary, the other day. 

Citrine Wagtail

This time last year we were watching birds like this in Belarus. Sadly, our tours this year are not running because of the... you-know-what. Nevermind, Citrine Wagtail is a great bird and we will see them next time!

White-backed Woodpecker male

Hard to get into the forests right now, so here is one from last spring in the Bukk Hills, Hungary. A male White-backed Woodpecker, one of our favourites. 

Goldcrest

One of the smallest birds in Europe: Goldcrest Regulus regulus. A great and always popular little bird!

Wallcreeper!

We just guided a birding group from the UK in South Moravia, the Czech Republic. The main target for everyone was Wallcreeper... so we and this wonderful stunner obliged!
