Mammals in Tanzania

Probirder is back from Tanzania ! Lots of good birds of course, but overall the large mammals - zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, various gazelles and antelopes, black rhino, elephants, hippos, lions, including cubs, and 2 cheetahs - were the highlight. This young elephant was carefully guarded by the herd. Photo by Gerard Gorman.

Tanzania here we come

So it will soon be time for Probirder to fly off to Tanzania. I expect that it will be hard to get on-line in the more remote areas, but actually, even if there is internet access, there might not be time to up-date this blog as there will be too much wildlife to see and it is best to be in the field!

Tanzania... up next

The European winter forces Probirder to go exotic again. Next up is a trip to Tanzania. Of course, some major mammal watching is on the cards there, but there are also many great birds to see, including 4 'new' species of woodpecker to find, photograph and sound record. Wonder whether I will have another elephant encounter as I did last time I was in Africa ?

Dark-backed Sibias

These two Dark-backed Sibias kept perching on the car, seemingly admiring themselves, but actually confused by their reflections in the window. Photo by Gerard Gorman taken at Doi Lang in northern Thailand, November 2013.

Probirder in NW Thailand

An update from the mountains of NW Thailand. Here is a Dark-backed Sibia I took in the Doi Ang Kang National Park a few days ago. Gerard Gorman.

Northern Thailand

The European birding season is over for this year for Probirder. Now a few long-haul, exotic destinations await. First up is Northern Thailand, in particular the mountains and forests of Chiang Mai Province in the north-west. There are some wonderful birds to find there. Watch this space !

Winter approaches

Most birding tour guiding is over here in eastern Europe as winter approaches, but there is still much to do. Checking out sites, up-dating the website and blogs, and in particular, I have to check the proofs of my forthcoming book WOODPECKERS OF THE WORLD - A PHOTOGRAPHIC GUIDE. Here is a preview of the book's cover (though it is not the final version, just a draft). Gerard Gorman.
