is one of Europe’s most experienced bird tour guides. He grew up in England and has been interested in birds, and all wildlife, for as long as he can remember. In the 1980s he visited Hungary on a student exchange program and eventually settled there. Over 20 years ago he founded Probirder (www.probirder.com) a guiding service for birders visiting C & E Europe. His knowledge of the birding sites of the region is second to none, having visited every country from the Baltic in the north to the Black Sea in the south. Gerard is also a widely published author. His books are listed above. His main ornithological interest focuses on the Picidae (woodpeckers) and he is widely regarded as an authority on the European species. Besides being author of the acclaimed handbook Woodpeckers of Europe, he also maintains a blog on the European members of family.
